Location and Access:
Motorcar Falls is located on the edge of Kakadu National Park, approximately 300 kilometers south-east of Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory.
The falls are accessible via a pretty rough dirt road; which can become washed away in the wet season. It then takes a 1-2 hour walk to hike into the spectacular waterfall and swimming pool.
There is a great campsite on the road into Motorcar Falls, called Kambolgie Creek Campgrounds. It only costs a few dollars per person, per night – but that gets you a cracking camp ground and access to a toilet block. Plus it’s only a 10 minute drive to Motorcar Falls from this campground.
Natural Beauty and Surroundings:
Motorcar Falls captivates visitors with its serene ambiance and untouched natural beauty. As you approach the falls, you’ll be enchanted by the rugged bushland and ancient rock formations that dominate the landscape.
The falls themselves consist of a huge torrent of water tumbling down a rocky cliff, forming inviting rock pools at their base. The crystal-clear water provides a refreshing respite from the tropical heat, inviting visitors to take a dip and connect with nature.
Swimming and Water Activities:
One of the highlights of Motorcar Falls is the opportunity to swim in the cool, freshwater pools. The falls offer a safe and swimming experience, although no swimming pool is ever 100% safe, please make sure you’re a strong swimmer.
The inviting turquoise water invites you to immerse yourself and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Keep in mind that during the wet season (November to April), swimming may not be possible due to increased water flow and potential hazards. But also keep in mind, that during the dry season, the waterfall can dry up.
Hiking and Exploring:
For the more adventurous souls, Motorcar Falls offers a range of hiking trails that allow you to explore the surrounding wilderness.
There is a series of trails – called the Yurmikmik walks, that criss cross through and along the mountain ranges that backs onto Motorcar Falls. These trails are all for experience and well prepared hikers, so make sure you know what you’re doing.
When planning a trip to Motorcar Falls, it’s essential to consider the following practicalities:
- Seasonal Variations: The best time to visit Motorcar Falls is the start of the the dry season (May to June) when the weather is pleasant, and the waterfall is flowing. The wet season brings heavy rainfall and potential road closures, so it’s advisable to check local conditions before setting out.
- Safety Precautions: While Motorcar Falls is generally a safe destination, it’s important to exercise caution. Watch for slippery rocks, adhere to signage and guidelines, and supervise children at all times.
- You essentially need a 4WD to get here. The road in can be nasty and rutted out, making it extremely punishing on your car. A low clearance 2WD is going to scrape and have a horrible time making it in.
